319 The International Agricultural Economy:
The nature of trade in agricultural products, trade policies and practices
of importing and exporting nations, agricultural policies of major trading
blocks, market instability and other primary commodity problems, recent
history and current development in multilateral trade policy.
474 Economic Problems of Developing Areas (cross-listed
with Econ. 474):
Problems of development, selected areas; agricultural technology, economic
institutions, and population pressure, consumption, savings, and capital
formation, principles of economic development.
577 Economics of Growth and Class Structure in Low
Income Countries (cross-listed with Econ. 577):
Analyzes the relationship between growth and the changes in land access,
employment, and class and intra-household structures which shape growth's
welfare effects in contemporary low income economies. Methodologically
explores the interface between neoclassical economics and marxian analysis.
731 Macroeconomics of Agricultural Development
The theory and empirical evidence about accumulation, growth and distribution
in less developed countries. Special attention on the interaction of agriculture
with other sectors. The approach combines Ricardian, Marxist, Neoclassical
and Institutional elements.
732 Microeconomics of Agricultural Development:
The microeconomics theory and empirical evidence about agricultural growth
and change in less developed countries. Five areas are studied: Peasant
behavior and supply response; technical change; rural labor markets; rural
factor markets and inter-linkage; and structural alternatives.

This course examines the historical evolution of the Third World in general
and North-South relations in specific. Particular attention is addressed
to the institutions of colonialism and patterns of post-colonial relations
between the First and Third Worlds.

Inter-state conflict and cooperation in Africa including Pan-Africanism
and regional integration; relations with major powers and UN; international
crisis in Southern Africa.
368 Special Topics in the Politics of Developing Areas:
A comparative investigation of particular themes, problems, institutions,
and theories relating to political change in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

A comparative analysis of the problems confronting underdeveloped areas;
